About the event

Speaker Bios:

Michael Cooper

Michael is a lawyer with Haynes and Boone, LLP, working primarily in the area of oil and gas transactions. He has significant experience in all aspects of corporate representation, ranging from day-to-day operational issues to major transactions to securities and taxation matters. He has represented clients in numerous industries, with the majority of his practice devoted to the highly-regulated oil and gas energy industry.

Michael is a Certified Public Accountant and the holder of an advanced law degree in taxation, which enables him to evaluate the many aspects of sophisticated business transactions.

He has actively participated, as both chief operating officer and general counsel, in the growth of a company from start-up to a $750 million dollar public entity. This experience facilitates his understanding of his clients' business goals and makes him particularly effective in helping them to pursue their own growth strategies. Because of his depth of experience, Michael can assist his clients not only with transactional issues, but also with operational and employment issues, risk management, compliance issues, and general corporate matters.

Michael currently serves as President of the non-profit Texas Energy Council, Inc., and recently served as Co-Chair of its Education Committee. He also serves as an officer of the Dallas Bar Association Energy Law Section.

Michael received his J.D. from Baylor Law School and an LLM in Taxation from Boston University School of Law. In addition to being a lawyer, he is a licensed CPA in Texas.

Michael lives in Plano with his wife, Dr. Monte Vaughan Cooper. They have 3 grown children and 2 granddaughters.

David Harper

David is a 1981 graduate of Southwestern Oklahoma State University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration as a major and Management as a minor.  After working as a landman and investing in wells around his hometown of Elk City, Oklahoma he returned to school at the University of Oklahoma during the oil bust of 1983. While at the University of Oklahoma he finished a minor in Geology, then obtained a Bachelor of Accountancy degree in 1986 and completed a major in Petroleum Land Management as a graduate student in 1987.

David has worked as a consultant since 1988 performing various Due Diligence and Land related research projects, as well as Gas Plant, Revenue, and Joint Venture Audits. He was a founding member of the land consulting firm Jessup Harper Dean, LLC in 1988 and is the owner of Dallas Petroleum Land Services LLC. Through various entities he owns and manages approximately 300-400 non-op working interests and 300-400 royalty interests.

David started Collin County Wildcatters during the Covid lockdown of 2020. He is a board member of the Petroleum Engineers Club of Dallas and the METT (Metroplex Energy Tennis Tournament). He is an active member of ADAM Energy Forum Dallas, The Dallas Petroleum Club, Dallas Association of Petroleum Landmen, Southlake Association of Petroleum Landmen, and American Association of Professional Landmen. He is a former Audit Committee Chairman of COPAS of Dallas.

David served on the AAPL Forms Committee (2016-2019) and is currently serving as co-chairman of the AAPL Model Form Participation Agreement Drafting Committee. He was co-chairman of the AAPL Model Form Purchase & Sale Agreement Drafting Committee.

David is a Certified Professional Landman (AAPL #5349) and Certified Public Accountant (TX #56931).

John Holden

John Holden is a partner at Jackson Walker LLP. John has been representing clients in the natural resources area for more than 40 years. He has advised clients with respect to all aspects of ownership, exploration, development, production, transportation, processing, sale, and marketing of oil and gas, and other natural resources and water. His experience includes the formation and financing of various types of entities, both public and private and the acquisition, development, and divestiture of hydrocarbons and related assets.

John typically serves as outside general counsel for his clients, both servicing and managing their legal needs. His personal involvement and commitment to each client and the relationship they develop is crucial in achieving the client’s goals. He is dedicated to keeping current on the law, resolving industry issues and identifying future trends.

In 2022 the Petroleum Engineers Club of Dallas will aim to meet on the 2nd Friday of every month (a few exceptions will happen and are noted on the club calendar).
